So, sitting here at 5am listening to the birds chirp outside rather loudly, I will try to go over the star trek movie I just saw.

Summary: Uhm... I didnt catch anything in the movie. Ok, so not nothing. But there were a lot of things that you would have to actually be a fan of the series for it to make any sense - or for you to catch on at all.

Me, being one who has only watched one or two star trek episodes my whole life, well, I didnt understand about 90% of the story.

********Caution, a few lines of spoilers here.******

So this is what I understood.
Kirk is the son of a famous captain, which fought a losing battle against an alien ship. The alien ship is from the future, controlled by a renegade soldier who is hell-bent on destroying all the planets because someone forgot to pull the trigger on a weapon that should have saved their homeworld. Said alien ship attacks federation, and federation gets beat down - and one of the planets obliterated by means of a black hole generating weapon. Somehow kirk wakes up on a snow planet, and randomly runs from aliens, and bumps into a good guy from the future. Somehow (again) they transport onto the ship, kirk becomes captain, and they chase the alien ship and blow itup, ironically using the same black hole weapon employed earlier. Everyone celebrates.

********end of spoilers******

OK. I probably missed out a few things here and there since it made no sense to me. The nuances of gestures here and there, and the "V" finger thing, and catch-phrases (which some old lady discussing throughout the movie - rather loudly too) all made no sense to me.

My verdict: If you are a fan of the tv-shows, go watch it. If you know your aliens from dudes with pointy ears and other dudes with tattoos and no female counterparts, it probably will all make sense. If you are like me, and do not know anything about Star Trek, this is probably a waste of your time and money - unless you don't care any for plot or character development. Then by all means, go! =D

And...whatever happened to the Klingon? They are so iconic even I've heard of them - and I believe there was only one or two references to them the whole movie.

Future of TV is On-Demand: No Thanks

I was perusing around the net the other day and happened upon this page at Digg talking about a new experimental service offered at BitLet that lets you stream videos directly from torrents. While the idea is definitely an interesting one, though I've yet to give it a try, what really caught my eye was the discussion going on the Digg page.

See, many people on that page had it right that this could potentially be useful in revolutionizing internet TV. The use of torrents can help to diffuse bandwidth costs for content providers and possibly make it easier for movies or TV shows to be available on the internet for free or at least for cheaper than what's out there now.

Then there are those who think this is the future of TV. Apparently, the ideal future for TV is one without channels where everything is available when you choose. Here's one user's comment: "The technology is there for a la carte television. Basically nothing but on-demand. No more channels, just like Hulu for your television."

Canucks vs Hawks Round 2 Wrap Up

After dismantling the St Louis Blues in round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Canucks turned thier sights onto a very young, fast and skilled Chicago Blackhawks team. On paper the odds were in favor of the Canucks, and after winning game 1 on home ice, many Vancouver fans may have had the Western Conference finals in thier sights. But the young and resilant Blackhawks team never gave up, and we saw this numerous times throughout the six game series, with the Hawks having to come back from a deficit in all 6 games, including multiple 2 and 3 goal leads that the Canucks had at various points in the series.

With the Hawks winning this series in 6 games with game 6 having a stunning score of 7-5 for the home team, that game in a sense summed up the entire series in 60 minutes of hockey. The Canucks took too many penalties, their penalty kill was ineffective, the young snipers of the Hawks put the puck in the net, the Canucks defense seemed very slow and a step behind on every play, and Khabibulin outplayed Roberto Luongo. Not many people are overly surprised at all the the items at the top of the list, penalty kill, slow defence, etc..., but no one, including myself thought that Roberto Luongo would be the second best, by a fair margin, goaltender in this series.

Im not going to bash Luongo and say this entire playoff failure is his fault, but under no circumstance in a do or die game can your goaltender give up 7 goals in a game and still expect the team in front of him to the win the game. Yes their have been numerous nights that Luongo stood on his head and won a game for the team, but he is still expected to give his team a chance at winning a game. He didnt need to stand on his head and keep the Hawks to a single goal, rather when the Canucks came back from down 3-1 to up 4-3, he had close the door and hold the fort. This isnt because he is the star goaltender or because he is making $7.5 million a year, rather because he has a C on his helmet and he is the leader and face of this franchise. But again goaltending was not the only problem the Canucks had in this series, but in game 6 with the home team putting in 7 goals it is a glaring issue.

Sync Files Between Two Computers With Folder Redirection and Offline Files

So, you find yourself within a growing group of people: you have two computers and want to keep all your personal files in-sync between the two of them. Whether it be your documents, or pictures, or even your internet favorites, you want access to the same files whether you're on your desktop at home or on your laptop on the road.

I'll cover an elegant way of syncing your files between two computers using Windows Folder Redirection and Offline Files. You would think that such a function would be easily accomplished considering how many people these days have multiple computers in the home... but you'd be surprised!

But in the meantime, those keen to give it a try before it's done and ready can download and install the Release Candidate (RC) starting today for free. You can find instructions on how to do this by going to the Windows 7 download page.

Like the Beta version of Windows 7, which was made available to the public in January, the RC version will be time-limited in that it will function normally until March 1, 2010. By that time, it's expected that Windows 7 will have already been released, and users should be using the full version anyways. Also keep in mind that, because an RC is still an incomplete product, you may experience bugs or oddities. From my own trials with the Beta earlier this year, however, and from what I've read elsewhere it's already as stable as Windows Vista.

Since the public has gotten its hands on the Windows 7 Beta, the operating system has received positive reviews all around. It's stable of new features have generally improved the usability of the operating system. Even its subtle additions like the ability to automatically place and resize windows to half the screen by dragging them to the edge of the monitor or the built-in keyboard shortcuts to move windows between multiple screens on a multi-monitor setup are things that I miss every day when using Vista. And on top of the new features, the real story with Windows 7 has been its overall refinement and performance -- it just feels snappier than its predecessor and informal tests have concluded that it's faster than both XP and Vista.

Dell's New Studio One 19 All-in-One: Touchy and Stylish

All-in-one desktop machines have always been a forgotten form factor in the PC world. Even though many have attempted to make a successful machine, none have come close to achieving the same degree of success as, admittedly, the iMac did for Apple. Maybe it's because PC users generally appreciate more customization and upgradability than an all-in-one can offer, or maybe it's simply because the offerings haven't been good enough in both specification and appearance.

Dell is trying to change that with its new Studio One 19 all-in-one desktop. Like other members of the Studio class, the Studio One 19 is a beautiful machine designed to be placed outside the office around the home. Contrary to what the name implies, it's built around a widescreen LCD that is only 18.5" on the diagonal, though its specifications range wide from a Pentium Dual Core E5200 processor on the cheapest model ($699 USD starting) to a Core 2 Quad Q8200 on the most expensive ($1238 USD starting). To my content, all but the basic model comes with at least 3GB of RAM and come pre-equipped with the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium.

Canucks vs Hawks Round 2 matchup

After a quick four game sweep of the St. Louis Blues, the Canucks have been on a extended break waiting for the second round to begin. In the meantime the Blackhawks have been in a tough and physical series with the Calgary Flames which went 6 games and was filled with emotion, hits, fights and bruised bodies. Although many picked these two teams to be first round combatants with about a week to go in the regular season, the Canucks surged past Calgary to win the division and have home ice both in the first round and now in the second against the Hawks as well. And after the Hawks going 1-2 on the road and the Canucks 2-0 at home in the first series, home ice may be the difference between these two teams.

Just because he has started skating, it doesn't mean that he is both physically and emotionally ready to step into a playoff game. The one thing the Vancouver Canucks have is time after their four game sweep of the Blues. With the 10-12 day layoff the team faces, this allows Pyatt to get into game shape along with gives him time to get his emotions and mental game where it needs to be.

But all this begs to question the fact if the Canucks even want or need Pyatt in the line up. During the season he was bounced around on all four lines, but spent most of the time on the 3rd and 4th lines as a checker and an energy guy. In 69 games he tallied 10 goals, 9 assists and had an even rating. As the season went on he was used more and more on the penalty kill as Coach AV was more comfortable using him in situations on the penalty kill and in key defensive situations. He was skating well, as skating is not one of his great skills, using his large frame and was a great compliment to the third line with Wellwood and Bernier.

Pyatt going after the puck along the boardsHowever since his departure from the team, Mason Raymond has taken his spot both on the penalty kill and on the third line and has looked great on the wing along side Wellwood and Bernier, and with Ryan Johnson on the penalty kill as well. For the first time this season his speed and effort levels look great, and he has been an offensive threat as well, as he hit a couple posts and had some great rushes in round 1.

Introduction to 64-bit Computing

It wasn't more than a few years ago that 64-bit computing was meant only for servers and workstations. Even after a 64-bit version of Windows XP was released, the transition to 64-bit computing was slow at best. Now, with the increasing adoption of Microsoft's memory-loving Windows Vista and the affordability of computer memory, the promise of 64-bit computing is finally here. Many new computers now come pre-loaded with a 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, and that trend is only going to accelerate.

So what does this all mean for you? What exactly is 64-bit computing? I'll introduce you to the concepts of 64-bit computing and share with you some pointers as to why you would need it. I must warn that there will be some technical speak, but I promise I'll try to keep it as simple as possible.

So what exactly is 64-bit computing?
In a nutshell, your computer's processor (or CPU) takes in a bunch of instructions given to it by your software and performs some computations on these instructions. During the computation process, it also needs to pull and use information that is stored in memory based on a location (or memory address) given to it. A 64-bit CPU simply means that your computer can store and process numbers that are made up of 64 bits, where a bit is simply a 1 or a 0; likewise, a 32-bit CPU can store and process numbers that are made up of 32 bits.

Canucks Break Between Series – Rest or Rust?

Ever since the Canucks wrapped up their first round series against the St Louis Blues, all the talk has been about the very realistic chance that the Canucks wont hit the ice for their second round series for about 10-12 days. Yes the Canucks do have their fair share of bumps and bruises, as do all playoff teams, but when does the line between rest and rust get crossed.

The talk around the team was that both Sundin and Salo would be ready to go if there was a Game 5, so either their injuries weren't that serious, or the Canucks PR team is just twisting the story to make it seem that way. Even after the game 4 win, goaltender Roberto Luongo needed 40 minutes of treatment before he came out to address the media. No one on that team is going to admit that they are in fact injured, as no injuries are ever disclosed during the playoffs, but all the players agree that a quick sweep of the Blues is a good thing and will allow them to be fresh and healthy for the second round.

But when does rest become rust, how long can the players practice and go through the motions? After a while the players will be chomping at the bit to get back into playoff action, and the worry is with the long break that it may take the players a period or two, or even a game or two, to get their playoffs legs. So it is up to the coaching staff to think of new ways to keep these players razor sharp as their second round opponents won't have any of that rust to shake off.

Canucks vs Blues Round 1 Wrap Up

With a 4 game sweep of the St Louis Blues, many see this as a lop sided series where the youth of the Blues showed and the great goaltending of Luongo propelled the Canucks into the second round, while creating Canucks history of the first 4 game sweep the franchise has ever had. But for the many that watched every moment of every game they all know this was a battle until the end, and alhtough the stats show otherwise, this was a very close series, and if it wasnt for a early whistle this series could easily be back in Vancouver for game 5, and even back to St Louis for game 6. By no means am I saying the Blues could pull off the improbable 3-0 come back to win four straight, but this series was a lot closer than many may think from an outside view looking in.

Although it wasn't the most hard hitting, bone shattering or physcially demanding series such as the Flames/Hawks, Pens/Flyers, it still had its fair share of big hits, scrums after the whistle and a general hate on for the other team. But in every game as every shift became more imporant, each penalty becoming more costly, we saw less and less of the borderline hits and less scrums after the whistle. This is not to say that these teams didnt have the general hate for each other, rather it seemed as if the players quickly realised that they could not be in the box for a game ending goal, as all the games, even the 3-0 shutout, were close all the way to the final horn. Only one game, game 4, went into overtime, but all of the third periods had that sudden death feeling, and everyone had that feeling of next goal wins, or the next goal may shift the momentum one way.

While some will chalk up the loss to the lack of experience that a young Blues team had, close to a dozen players entering their first set on NHL playoffs, it was rather the lack of production by their veterans that was the real reason this series ended so early. The Blues didnt get enough production from Tkchuck, McDonald and even Jackman on the back end, and yes some of their youngsters were very quiet, Berglund, Oshie, Perron, but this is to be expected out of the young players, and its up to the veterans to step up and lead this team each game.

Experimenting with Apple's "Legal Copy" TV Ads: (Un)surprising Results

Apple's latest TV ad: "Legal Copy"In case you haven't seen it already, Apple's latest television ad depicts the "PC guy" with a bunch of legal copy popping up after every positive statement made in the commercial.
The gist of the ad essentially says that there are gotchas to the statements made by PC about how easy it is to use, and so it needs legal copy in order to protect itself. So, apparently the Mac is so perfect that it doesn't need to deal with legal copy.

5. Rangers vs. Capitals

Coming into this series everyone say the Caps as a team that could potentially come out of the East, especailly with the offensive talent that they have with the likes of Ovechkin, Semin and Green on the back end as well. The only weak spot that most analyists saw was between the pipes with Jose Theodore, who the Caps hoped would return to his Hart Trophy form from a few years back. The Rangers on the other hand had limped into the playoffs and looked like a good fit for the Caps. Fast forward 3 games into this series and the Rangers have a 2-1 lead with both wins in Washington, and forcing the Caps to bench Theodore and use rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov. Yes the kid has been very good for them in net, only allowing 1 goal in 2 games, but no one expected Theodore to get pulled after 1 game and for the Rangers to win both games in Washington, this is shaping up to be a very interesting series.

Canucks vs Blues Game 4 Preview

With the way this series is going it looks as if the Canucks will be able to move past the Blues and head straight into Round 2 and await their opponent. With the Canucks having the Blues in a 3-0 stranglehold, it is more of a matter of how many games then if the Canucks will finish off the Blues. With tomorrows game in St Louis the Canucks have an oppurtunity to have a clean 4 game sweep on the Blues on thier home ice, but keep in mind the Blues are going to come out gunning and put on a solid effort as there backs are against the wall and may play like a team with nothing to lose, which can be very dangerous in professional sports. Add in the Canucks never being able to sweep a team during a seven game series and game 4 will be a great one for hockey fans.

Mats Sundin battling with some St Louis BluesThe Canucks on the other hand are playing great defensivley, are getting great goaltending from Roberto Luongo and have been fantastic on the power play and have killed 3 seperate, very long, 5 on 3's that could have changes the whole landscape of this series. Offensivley the Sedins have 9 points in 3 games, and have gotten secondary scoring from the likes of Burrows, Bernier, Sundin and a number of defensemen as well. Although the team is playing well, the Canucks still have some adversity to overcome in the form of an injury to the 10 million dollar man Mats Sundin.

With a 3-0 lead the Canucks have the choice of whether or not to give the big Swede an extra maintainence day and hope the team can close them out without his presence in the line up, or they can bring him back into the lineup and try to finish off the Blues in game 4. Personally I think they should give Sundin an extra couple days off as his 38 year old lower body injury, most likely his hip or groin, is not going to heal as fast or feel as great as it would have been if he was 5-7 years younger. There is no reason to rush him back in for game 4 as they have the luxury of coming back to Vancouver in game 5 and winning the series on home ice. Also keep in mind this team won game 3 without Sundin, and didnt look like they missed his presence a great deal.

5 Steps to Making iTunes Your Favorite Music Player

Love it or hate it, Apple's iTunes is one of the most popular digital music players around thanks to the success of the iPod.
As much as the iPod contributes to the player's overall popularity, iTunes does have a decent interface, great library management, and numerous other features going for it. Things like Party Shuffle and the new Genius playback mode are great alternatives to your standard "shuffle" playback. The idea is that each product the company puts out ought to work together, with the end result being an end-to-end platform that covers a wide gamut with minimal overlap. The Windows/Server/Office trifecta is a prime example of this, and has worked to propel Microsoft into its now traditional market position.

Windows LiveBut Gates' successor, Ray Ozzie, is taking the company in a different direction, putting the company into a kind of "startup mode," much like a small startup company. While the intent of this move by the Chief Software Architect is definitely commendable, as it gives more freedom to developers in the company to develop for the sake of developing, the end result is a confusing mish-mash of overlapping products in the all-important Windows Live lineup. With stiff competition coming from the likes of Google, Microsoft needs their Windows Live brand to shine in order to survive in an ever-connected world.

There's no better example of this madness than Microsoft's cloud-computing and cloud-storage offerings. When I say the cloud, I mean having the storage or processing of your data done through services on the internet. I consider myself a power user, yet when I attempted to find a suitable solution for syncing files between my desktop and laptop a couple months ago (a simple and ever-common problem these days), I was met with a tangled mess when looking into Microsoft's offerings.

Canucks vs Blues Round 1 matchup

With the playoffs right around the corner the Canucks have matched up against the St Louis Blues and both teams have been red hot in the last two months of the season. The season series has been pretty even and all the games have been very entertaining, and we cant forget the Backes-Bernier offer sheets that were handed out this summer. Along with a couple players returning to their previous team, Johnson and Demitra, this is shaping up to be a very interesting matchup. Here is a breakdown of how each of the teams match up against each other:

Time and time again, I've read about how important it was to make backups of files, and time and time again the lazy bug came back to bite.

Sure, I dabble in a bit of minor backups, but I haven't done anything serious. At most, I make copies of my most important work-related files. The backups have always been on-site, often on the same computer and -- I'm embarrassed to say -- often on the same hard drive. But these were backups meant mainly to save my data from yours truly and not from anything of the disastrous sort.

My two greatest barriers when it comes to off-site backups are probably the same for most others: cost and complexity of task. I knew there were plenty of services out there that offered backups through the internet, and the ones I found before were usually for a yearly fee of about $50 or so. (In hindsight, it's really quite affordable.) But I'm cheap.

Dragon Ball Kai + Full Metal Alchemist : Brotherhood

So if you guys haven't heard, they are doing a HD version of Dragon Ball Z anime called Dragon Ball Kai and after watching the first episode , it looks pretty good to me. Hopefully they are gonna remove the episodes of "CHARGING MAH LAZER" and not doing anything to make the entire anime look good.

In addition - we got ourselves another remake : Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - this week being the second episode. It's going to be following the manga a lot more, however from the first episode, the animation is already a little lacking compared to the first anime.

Fearless Cheerleader: "Cheerleaders Y du u think their stupid?"

I saw this on failblog.com and I couldn't quit laughing. With one game left for both the Canucks and the Flames, the Canucks are 2 points up and only need a single point against the Avalance to win the Northwest division.

The Flames on the other hand have dug themselves a very deep hole after not being able to beat a back up goalie who hasnt played in 30 some games and a team that is getting ready for a round of golf rather than a round of the playoffs. They now need the Avalanche to beat the Canucks in regulation and now need to beat an Edmonton team with nothing to lose and a ton of confidence after beating them 5-1 tonght.

Now this gives the Canucks coaching staff a couple of interesting decsions as the team only needs a single point to clinch the division. So this means that the Canucks can lose the game (in overtime or shootout) and still win the division. Since I have already gone over whether or not to rest some players for tomorrows game, I wont go over it again, but rather give it a quick summary of the guys who can use some rest and guys who can use some playing time.

5 Handy Windows Vista Usability Tips to Keep You Sane

In my last post, I explained why people shouldn't reach for their Windows XP discs and downgrade from Vista to XP. In case you're on the cusp of giving up on Vista, here's 5 tips that should improve your user experience and bring you back from the brink.

Tip 1. Use search liberally
One of the major changes in Windows Vista is a fundamental emphasis on search. All aspects of your computing experience is made searchable out of the box. This means that you can search and open programs, documents, and files right from within your Start menu. You can even search the web from your Start menu too!

Use the search function in your Start menu, even when doing something as simple as launching a program. You'll save precious time by just typing in a keyword from the program's name rather than having to go through the "All Programs" list and browsing for your program. Once you get used to resisting the urge to browse for what you're looking for, it's really a matter of typing in a few keys from the name of the program and hitting Enter right after.

New Email Alerts Help Members Stay in Touch with Friends and Fans

We're happy to announce the availability of a much-requested feature: email alerts. Now, members can elect to receive updates, conveniently delivered to their email addresses, of activities related to their Thotswap accounts.

Examples of activities that can trigger alerts include someone leaving a comment on your public profile or on one of your blog posts or reviews, or someone becoming a fan of you. All of these alerts can, of course, be modified by every member. As a convenience, we've turned them on for you, so if you want to disable some or all of the alerts, you can do so from within a new panel in your Dashboard.

We, along with those who requested this feature, think these simple alerts will go a long way in further engaging every member in the Thotswap community.

Last couple games of the season - do we rest for the playoffs??

With the last two games left against the Kings and the Avs do the Canucks rest a few bodies and give the likes of Davison, Vannanen, Hansen and Labarbera a couple of games? Or is the division and home ice that important that we go all out and push for the division while risking both fatigue and injury to a couple of our top guns, especially Roberto Luongo. With the Flames having their last two games against the Oilers, who will definatley be playing spoiler but will also be playing their backup goalie along with giving a couple of kids a shot in the last couple games, the Canucks need some help when it comes to the division titile.

So do we forfiet a division title and start on the road against the Blackhawks, who we may match up better against, or do we want to push for that division banner and face the Blue Jackets in the first round and maybe run into the hottest goalie in the league in Steve Mason. If we dont beat the Kings on Thursday I guarantee we see a couple new faces in the lineup for the season finale, but if it comes to that last game versus the Avs it will be a tough choice as all we may need is a win to clinch the division. Either way the next couple of days will be very interested and both fans and players will be keeping a close eye on the Battle of Alberta.

Anyone else have any comments on what the team should do? Do we match up better against Chicago or Columbus?

Rypien and Hansen Healthy- who loses their spot in the playoffs?

With the Canucks finally a relativly healthy hockey team, its time for the coaching staff to make some decisions for the playoffs when it comes to the bottom six forward spots. Lately coach AV has been mixing and matching numerous line combinations, especially on th fourth line and the wing position on the third line. The only constant on both lines have been Wellwood and Bernier on the third line, and Johnson centering the fourth line. But there has been numerous wingers slotted on the remaining three forward spots. The battle for the winger spots are basically between Rick Rypien, Jannik Hansen, Mayson Raymond, Taylor Pyatt and Darcy Hordichuck.

With all the players bringing a different aspect to the lineup it gives the Canucks a bunch of possibilities and allows them to put out a fourth line that will be most effective against which ever team they match up with in the playoffs. With Hordichuck they get a lot of toughness and grit and have a legitimate heavyweight tough guy, but how many times will he drop the gloves in the playoffs and will he get a regulat shift in the post season?

Jannik Hansen and Mayson Raymond both add some speed and offensive touch around the net, with Raymond haveing more offensive, and both will get a regular shift along with time on the penalty kill as well. Although both players are very small and dont add very much toughness, they are both versatile enough that they can play in the top six along with the bottom six as well. Also with Hansen you get a right handed shot who may be a benefit in his own zone when it comes to digging out pucks and clearing the zone.
